Jun/29/2011Compression Anyone?
|
|
We all know that a good mastering job requires more than just good gear. It also requires a well-treated room, an honest monitoring system and -- above all -- an excellent mastering engineer. Yet sometimes a piece of equipment comes along that paints a giant smile on our faces and reminds us how magical outboard gear can be in the mastering process.
Recently, this happened to us when we brought in the Shadow Hills Industries Mastering Compressor. It´s massive at 5U in rack height, plus another 2U for the separate power supply. The unit features two compressors in series: (a) an optical compressor, and (b) a discrete compressor, run off a classic VCA compression circuit. It also boasts three different output transformers -- all with audibly different characters. Mmmmmm.....
The Shadow Hills Industries Mastering Compressor has been a pleasure to work with. We´ve found it´s compression characteristics to be exceptionally musical. Paired with our Airfield Liminator 2 we feel the tonal possiblilities are endless! With so many options to choose from, the unit invites exploration, often leading us to places we might never have thought to venture.
We hope you have a chance to drop by the studio soon and see what the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor can do to a mix! |
